Armagnac 1943

A 1943 armagnac comes from the 1943 harvest alone, distilled in Gascony and then kept in oak casks for decades: it is 83 years old in 2026. Our selection includes one bottle, a brut de fût Bas-Armagnac from the Jean Cavé house, in Lannepax, at 40.5% ABV, in 70 cl, delivered in a presentation case. A rare piece for an 83rd birthday, or to complete a cellar of old vintages.

Armagnac 1943

The vintage: one year and one year only

When an armagnac bears a year, it means that all the brandy in the bottle comes from that harvest. There is no blending with younger harvests, and no correction of style. Age-statement armagnacs, VSOP, XO or hors d'âge, follow a different logic: the house marries several years to obtain a consistent taste. A vintage, on the other hand, lets a single season speak.

A 1943 still available in 2026 is the exception. It means that a family kept this lot for more than eighty years, without selling it, without cutting it, watching over its development in the cellar.

1943, a year of occupation

Since November 1942, the whole of France had been occupied. On 16 February 1943, a law established the Service du travail obligatoire (compulsory labour service), which sent many young French people to work in Germany (source: Wikipedia, article "Service du travail obligatoire (France)"). In this difficult context, the Gascon vines were harvested in the autumn and the wine went to the still during the winter. No source from the houses describes the 1943 harvest in Armagnac: we therefore say nothing more about it.

The Jean Cavé house's 1943

Our only 1943 armagnac comes from Jean Cavé. In 1883, a winegrower of that name settled in Lannepax, in the Gers, as a distiller and cellar master. Four generations later, Henri Cavé carries on armagnac's continuous distillation and watches over one of the finest collections of old brandies in the appellation, including demijohns dating back to 1900.

The information on the product sheet:

  • Bas-Armagnac AOP, from the 1943 harvest only;
  • brandy without blending, aged in Gascon oak casks;
  • bottled brut de fût, without reduction, at 40.5% ABV;
  • 70 cl bottle, delivered in a presentation case.

Brut de fût: why only 40.5% ABV?

Brut de fût is often associated with high strength. That is true for an armagnac a few years old, which leaves the still at around 52 to 72% ABV according to the rules of the appellation. But over more than eight decades, the alcohol slowly evaporates through the wood: this is the angels' share. The natural strength of a very old armagnac can thus fall to close to 40% ABV without the house adding a single drop of water. The 40.5% ABV of this 1943 is the result of this long ageing.

The difference from a reduced armagnac lies in the method, not just in the figure: here, nothing has been added to adjust the strength.

The terroir and grape varieties of armagnac

The armagnac appellation extends over three areas of Gascony: Bas-Armagnac, where Lannepax lies, Ténarèze and Haut-Armagnac. The main grape varieties are ugni blanc, baco, folle blanche and colombard; for its 1943, the house does not specify the grape varieties. The white wine from the harvest, lively and light, is distilled continuously, in a single pass, in the armagnac still, then the brandy matures in oak casks. The oak gives it its colour, its tannins and its bouquet; bottling stops this ageing. It is these Gascon wines, and not the great growths of neighbouring Bordeaux, that make the brandies of the region: modest wines, transformed by the still and by time.

Tasting an 83 year old armagnac

Jean Cavé does not publish a tasting note for this 1943. The house does, however, describe the style of its old vintages: a mahogany hue, with woody, vanilla and cocoa aromas. Armagnacs of this age often also evoke prune, dried fruit, walnut, coffee or rancio.

Pour a little, into a tulip glass, at room temperature. Let it open up for ten minutes, breathe it in, then taste in small sips. It lends itself to a digestif among a small circle.

As for pairings, keep it simple: a strong espresso, a square of dark chocolate, a few dried fruits. Nothing should mask an armagnac of this age on the palate. Even in a small measure, each sip lasts a long time.

Giving a 1943 armagnac

In 2026, people born in 1943 celebrate their 83rd birthday. A bottle from their birth year, presented in its case, is among the most personal gift ideas in our shop. Collectors will place it between the 1942 armagnac and the 1944 armagnac.

Keep it upright, somewhere cool and dark, noting the opening date on the label if you wish. Unopened, it keeps for a very long time; once opened, it can be enjoyed over several months.

For other years, other houses

Our shop also offers the vintage armagnacs of several estates and châteaux of the South West: Château de Laubade, Château de Millet, Dartigalongue, Armagnac Delord, Castarède, Baron de Sigognac, Clés des Ducs or Domaine de Pellehaut. Each house has its own tradition and style: the brandies of Laubade, Pellehaut or Dartigalongue, for example, let you discover other terroirs of the region, from Bas-Armagnac to Ténarèze.
