Other spirits

Alongside Armagnac, our cellar brings together other appellation French spirits, chosen from producers whose work we know: calvados from Normandy, cognacs from the Charentes and, for the aperitif, Floc de Gascogne. Age statements, old vintages or blends to drink young: enough to complete a bar, discover another region of France or find the year of a birthday.

Other spirits

Three families, three regions of France

These spirits have something in common with Armagnac: they are products of a terroir, tied to an appellation, a fruit and a distilling know-how handed down over centuries. Our selection is deliberately short: we offer no rum, whisky or gin, but French fruit and wine brandies, and their Gascon cousin.

Calvados, the cider brandy of Normandy

Calvados is made by distilling ciders, and sometimes perry, then ages for at least two years in oak casks. We offer it from Roger Groult, a Pays d'Auge family that distils twice in a pot still, from the Réserve 3 ans to the oldest blends, and from Charles de Granville, from the Fine to vintage calvados. Everything about the appellation and our bottles is on our calvados page.

Cognac, the wine brandy of the Charentes

Cognac is distilled twice in the Charentais still, then aged in oak casks. The Gaston de Casteljac brand is represented with a VSOP, an XO and the 1970, 1976, 1980 and 1990 vintages. Age statements and our tasting advice are gathered on our cognac page.

Floc de Gascogne, the aperitif of Armagnac country

Floc is not a spirit drink but a liqueur wine: fresh grape juice muted with young Armagnac, white or rosé, to serve well chilled, on its own or in a cocktail. We source it from Delord and Château de Laubade; find it on our Floc de Gascogne page.

How to choose a spirit

  • For the aperitif: a Floc de Gascogne, white or rosé, served between 6 and 8 °C;
  • For a digestif: a calvados or a cognac with a high age statement, an XO or a hors d'âge, at room temperature in a tulip glass, letting the aromas open up;
  • As a gift: a vintage calvados or cognac, bearing the year of the harvest, like our vintage Armagnacs;
  • To compare: a cognac or a calvados next to an Armagnac of the same age, to taste what sets wine apart from cider fruit, and double from single distillation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Armagnac, cognac and calvados?

Armagnac and cognac are white wine brandies, the first from Gascony, the second from the Charentes. Cognac is distilled twice; Armagnac is most often distilled once, continuously. Calvados is a cider brandy, produced in Normandy.
