Armagnac 1977

1977 vintage armagnac, one year and one year only

A vintage armagnac bears the year of its harvest. The 1977 vintage therefore contains only brandies made from grapes harvested in 1977, never blended with other years. That is what sets it apart from a VSOP, an XO or a hors d'âge, which combine brandies of several ages to keep a consistent style. A vintage, for its part, tells the story of one harvest and of a house's savoir-faire.

In Gascony, it all starts with a dry white wine made from the grape varieties of the appellation: ugni blanc, baco, folle blanche and colombard. In winter, this wine is distilled in the armagnac still, continuously. The still colourless spirit then goes into oak casks and ages in the cellar. The wood gives it its colour and its aromas of vanilla and spice, and time softens it. Once bottled, armagnac stops evolving: the bottling date, when shown, tells you the real length of ageing.

Our 1977 armagnacs, house by house

Each estate made, distilled and aged its harvest in its own way. Here are the houses in our selection and their notes on this vintage.

  • Château de Millet, in Eauze, in Bas-Armagnac, farmed by the Dèche family for five generations on its tawny sands. Its 1977, made from baco and ugni blanc, is reduced to 42% ABV and available in 70 cl, 150 cl magnum and 250 cl Gascon pot. The vineyard is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale level 3 (High Environmental Value). The estate does not publish a tasting note for this year.
  • Armagnac Castarède, a family house founded in 1832. Its 1977 spent 43 years in oak casks before being bottled in 2020; it is 40% ABV and comes in a gift case.
  • Baron de Sigognac, made by the Guasch family at Château de Bordeneuve, where each vintage ages separately. This 1977 at 40% ABV has a deep acacia honey colour, an elegant nose dominated by prune with a light peppery touch, a spicy palate lifted by a hint of lime zest, and a long, fresh finish.
  • Clés des Ducs, whose 1977 was distilled in Panjas, at the Chai de Bordeneuve. Like all the house's vintages, it is not blended: the cellar master selects the casks for a rich, smooth brandy with measured oak. It is 40% ABV.
  • Jean Cavé, a distiller and ageing house based in Lannepax since 1883, whose 1977 is presented as a brut de fût (cask strength, not reduced), in 70 cl.

Our advice for choosing your 1977 armagnac

Three questions help you choose. First, the estate: each Bas-Armagnac house has its own aromatic profile, and the tasting notes published on each product page will guide you. Next, the age: the bottling date, when known, tells you how many years the brandy spent in cask, such as the 43 years of Castarède's 1977, bottled in 2020. Finally, the size: 70 cl for a personal gift, a 1.5 litre magnum or a 2.5 litre Gascon pot for a celebration to share, in a gift case or gift box depending on the house.

Strength matters too. An armagnac reduced to 40 or 42% ABV is soft and approachable; a brut de fût, bottled without any added water, keeps more power. For any question about a bottle, our customer service will answer you before you order.

Tasting notes for a 1977 armagnac

After more than four decades in cask, an armagnac of this age has found its balance between fruit and wood. Aromas often found: prune, candied fruit, toasted almond, vanilla, sweet spices, citrus peel, sometimes a touch of rancio. On the palate, the texture is often round, with dried fruit; the finish remains lingering. Yet each rare vintage keeps its own signature, from one estate to another.

Serve it at room temperature, in a tulip glass, without ice. Let it open up for a few minutes, then taste in small sips. As a digestif, it needs nothing else. Once opened, keep it upright, away from light: it will keep for several months.

49 in 2026, 50 in 2027: a gift to plan ahead

In 2026, people born in 1977 celebrate their 49th birthday; in 2027, it will be their 50th, and couples married in 1977 will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. An armagnac from their year of birth or marriage is a birthday gift that means something: a brandy harvested in the same year and aged in Gascony all that time. Château de Millet's Gascon pot and magnum are ideal for a large gathering; the 70 cl bottle, in a gift case at Castarède, remains the most popular choice.
