What is a 1972 vintage armagnac?
The vintage refers to the year of the harvest. A 1972 armagnac therefore contains only brandies from the 1972 harvest, with no blending with other years. A VSOP or an XO, on the other hand, combines brandies of different ages to achieve a consistent style; a vintage keeps the imprint of one single season and of the estate that aged it.
Its origin is always the same: Gascony, in the South West, between the Gers, the Landes and the Lot-et-Garonne. The grape varieties of the appellation, ugni blanc, baco, folle blanche and colombard, produce a light, acidic white wine that is not meant for drinking. Distilled in winter in the armagnac still, this wine becomes a brandy that then sets off on a long ageing in oak casks, in the darkness of the cellar.
1972, in Gascony and elsewhere
1972 is the year of the Munich Olympic Games, overshadowed by the attack on the Israeli delegation, and the year the Watergate scandal broke. Far from the headlines, the Gascon vines followed their course: harvest in the autumn, distillation over the winter, then decades of patience in the cellar. Time did the rest.
The 1972 armagnacs in our cellar
Each estate offers its own interpretation of the year. Here is what you will find on this page, with the notes published by the houses themselves.
- Château de Laubade, in Sorbets, in the heart of Bas-Armagnac. Its 1972, made 100% from this single harvest, was aged in Gascon pedunculate oak casks and bottled at the château, at 40% ABV, in a 50 cl bottle. Vanilla, wood, raisins and toasty notes open onto a fruity, round and supple palate, with a finely persistent aromatic length.
- Armagnac Castarède, an independent family house founded in 1832. Its 1972 spent 48 years in cask before being bottled in 2020, at 40% ABV: a well-crafted brandy, all suppleness.
- Baron de Sigognac, made at Château de Bordeneuve, where each vintage ages separately in the cellar. This 1972 at 40% ABV has an elegant nose, with aromas of dried fruit well married to the wood, then a broad palate with spicy flavours and a candied fruit finish.
- Dartigalongue, a family house in Nogaro since 1838. Its 1972, at 42% ABV, opens with flambéed banana, caramel and exotic fruit; the attack is round and supple, and the finish refined, with smoked wood.
- Jean Cavé, a distiller and ageing house in Lannepax since 1883, whose 1972 is presented as a brut de fût (cask strength, not reduced), in a 70 cl bottle.
For other brandies from the same year, this page also features a 1972 calvados from Charles de Granville, distilled from Normandy cider.
Aromas and tasting of 1972 armagnac
More than fifty years in cask give an amber colour with coppery glints and great complexity. The most common notes in armagnacs of this age: prune, hazelnut, candied fruit, orange peel, vanilla, cocoa, sweet spices, sometimes the rancio of very old brandies. The palate gains in balance and the finish in length.
To enjoy it at its best, serve it at room temperature, in a tulip glass rather than a decanter or a balloon glass. Look at its colour, smell it first from a distance, then take a small sip and hold it in your mouth for a few seconds. Once opened, the bottle keeps upright, away from light, for several months without losing its quality.
A gift for the 54th birthday of someone born in 1972
In 2026, people born in 1972 celebrate their 54th birthday, and couples married that year their 54th wedding anniversary. Giving them an armagnac from their year means giving a spirit that has lived through the same half-century as they have. It can be enjoyed on the day of the celebration or kept in a collection for another moment. The 50 cl bottle from Château de Laubade makes a lovely gesture; the 70 cl bottle remains the most common size.
Frequently asked questions about 1972 armagnac
What is the best 1972 armagnac?
There is no single best 1972 armagnac, but rather different styles. Laubade and Castarède lean towards suppleness, Sigognac towards breadth, Dartigalongue towards exotic fruit and smoke, and Jean Cavé offers the character of a brandy drawn straight from the cask. The bottling date, when known, also tells you how many years the ageing in cask lasted. Choose according to your own taste and that of the person you are giving it to.
How much does 1972 armagnac cost?
Prices vary according to the estate, the bottle size and the strength. Each product page on this page shows the price, the producer and the size.
