Gaston de Casteljac cognacs in our selection

Among our Gascon eaux-de-vie, a few cognacs have their place, for enthusiasts who enjoy comparing France's great brandies. Gaston de Casteljac is one of them, with a short range: two blends and four vintages, all in 70 cl at 40% vol.

The VSOP and the XO

The Gaston de Casteljac VSOP cognac, presented in a gift sleeve, shows a golden-yellow colour and a fresh nose of ginger; the VSOP statement guarantees at least four years of ageing in wood. The Gaston de Casteljac XO Cognac, in a decanter and pine wood case, has a light amber colour, a nose of cinnamon then prune, and a rich, round palate where clove meets notes of red fruit. A lovely choice for a gift.

Vintage cognacs: 1970, 1976, 1980 and 1990

Rare in cognac, vintages come from a single harvest, with the year shown on the label. The 1970 offers an amber colour with mahogany glints, candied fruit and currants, a structured palate and a spicy finish. The 1976 opens on exotic fruit and spice, supple and mellow. The 1980 combines cinnamon and dried fruit, with a smooth finish. Finally, the 1990 blends prune, vanilla and a smoky touch, followed by honey, baked apple and orange peel.

Who is Gaston de Casteljac?

Gaston de Casteljac is the name of a cognac brand, not an estate you can visit. It is produced by Bordeneuve Châteaux & Collections, the family house of the Guasch family based in Castelnau-d'Auzan-Labarrère, in the Gers, which also produces Baron de Sigognac armagnac and Château de Bordeneuve, as well as Charles de Granville calvados. Not to be confused with the Castelbajac family name, which sounds very similar.

Gaston de Casteljac cognacs are offered under the Grande Champagne designation, cognac from the most renowned cru of the Cognac region. The brand highlights carefully selected raw materials and slow distillation, without filtration, in the spirit of cognacs of old.

Cognac and Gascon eaux-de-vie: what is different

Both are born from a white wine and aged in oak casks, but the method differs. The cognac appellation requires double distillation in a Charentais pot still, whereas in Gascony distillation is most often done just once, continuously, in a column still. Cognac is often described as finer and more floral, its Gascon cousin as richer and more fruit-driven. Tasting a Gaston de Casteljac next to a Baron de Sigognac, from the same house, is a good way to sense the difference.

How to choose your Gaston de Casteljac cognac

  • To discover the brand: the VSOP, fresh and spicy, after dinner or in a cocktail;
  • As a gift: the XO in its decanter and wooden case;
  • For a birthday or anniversary: the 1970, 1976, 1980 or 1990 vintage, if the year matches;
  • To compare: a vintage cognac alongside a Gascon eau-de-vie from the same year, or the VSOP alongside a Charles de Granville calvados.

Tasting and serving

Serve cognac at room temperature, in a tulip glass, and let it open up for a few minutes. The VSOP works well with an ice cube or tonic; the XO and the vintages are best enjoyed neat, slowly, at the end of a meal. Each product page details the tasting notes for the bottle.
