1980, the year the Académie opened its doors to women
On 6 March 1980, Marguerite Yourcenar became the first woman elected to the Académie française. In the vineyards of the Gers and the Landes, life went on: harvest in autumn, distillation over the winter. We have not found a reliable report on the 1980 harvest in Armagnac; so it is the producers' notes, cask by cask, that tell the story of this vintage.
Our selection of 1980 armagnacs
- Château de Millet, in Eauze, Dèche family: a Bas-Armagnac at 42%, in the classic size, magnum or Gascon pot. The estate does not publish tasting notes for this 1980 Bas-Armagnac;
- Armagnac Delord, in Lannepax: 40% ABV, in the classic size and in magnum. Rich and very complex aromas of hyacinth, violet and citrus; a round, supple palate of candied fruit;
- Château de Laubade, in Sorbets: 40%, amber colour, an intense nose of oak and tangy rancio, a supple palate with aromas of toasted almond and plum;
- Dartigalongue, in Nogaro: 42%, a very empyreumatic profile, smoked wood and roasting, a taut, straight palate, and a finish of undergrowth and date;
- Armagnac Castarède: 40 years in cask, bottled in 2020, 40% ABV;
- Baron de Sigognac: lovely freshness, dried fruit, candied orange and rancio, great mellowness and a lightly oaky finish;
- Domaine de Danis: a brut de fût at 48%, bright amber colour, candied fruit, vanilla and cocoa, round and well-integrated tannins, a long finish;
- Jean Cavé: a brut de fût at 53.4% ABV, the most powerful on the page.
To compare two brandies from the same year, the page also offers a 1980 cognac from Gaston de Casteljac, from Grande Champagne, delicate and round, with cinnamon and candied fruit.
40% or brut de fût?
Houses often bring their armagnac down to 40 or 42% to soften it. A brut de fût armagnac, on the contrary, keeps the strength reached in the cask: 48% at Danis, 53.4% at Jean Cavé. More intense, it is drunk in small sips and appeals to lovers of character; a 40% will better suit someone discovering old armagnac.
Origin and making of a 1980 armagnac
The white wine from the 1980 harvest, made from grape varieties such as ugni blanc, baco blanc, folle blanche or colombard, goes through the armagnac still, in continuous distillation. The brandy then ages in oak casks, in the cellar, where it takes on its colour and highlights: forty years of ageing for the Castarède. Terroir matters too: the tawny sands of Bas-Armagnac for most of our estates, while Ténarèze and Haut-Armagnac, the other two regions of the appellation, give other styles. No blending: the vintage stays true to its date, and the label displays it.
46th birthday or 46th wedding anniversary
In 2026, you celebrate your 46th birthday if you were born in 1980, and your 46th wedding anniversary if you married in 1980. A bottle from this vintage makes a unique and personal gift, to open together or to keep in a collection. The 70 cl bottle is a simple gift; the magnum and the Gascon pot mark a big celebration.
How to taste a 1980 armagnac
A tulip glass, room temperature, a little patience: let it breathe, warm it in your hand, then taste in small sips. Keep the bottle upright, away from light; once opened, it keeps for several months.
