Marcel Trépout Armagnac: Vintages Built for Ageing Since the 1940s
Marcel Trépout armagnacs trace their origins to Château Notre Dame. In the 1940s, Marcel Trépout took over the cellars of Maison Daroux, located in the estate's buildings, and laid the foundations of a house of great Gascon armagnacs. The house is now part of the Club des Marques, alongside Sempé, Monluc and Jean Cavé.
Thirty Years in Cask, Then the Dame-Jeanne
Trépout eaux-de-vie are aged in traditional oak casks of around 400 litres, for at least thirty years in the case of the oldest. The cellar master follows the ageing cask by cask, so that each cuvée gains in aromatic complexity and integrated oak.
Once maturity and balance have been reached, the armagnac is taken out of the wood and kept in a glass demijohn, the dame-jeanne. This stage halts the extraction of tannins and preserves the finesse and aromas of old vintages for generations to come.
The Blends: From Fine to Extra 30 Years
A blend marries eaux-de-vie from several harvests; the age stated is that of the youngest. The whole range is AOC Armagnac, 40% ABV, 70 cl, made from ugni blanc and baco 22-A aged in French oak casks. Below are the tasting notes from the house's technical sheets.
- Fine: citrus, acacia blossom, honey, vanilla and sandalwood, with a touch of peppermint. Silver Medal at the Talents de l'Armagnac.
- VS 4 years: raisin, citrus, lily flower, cedar and honey; silky and round, with a long, fresh finish of minty liquorice. Silver Medal at the Concours Général Agricole.
- VSOP 8 years: nuts, candied fruit, chocolate and blond tobacco; round and highly complex, with a rich, juicy finish.
- XO 12 years: candied fruit, chocolate, gingerbread and vanilla and cinnamon French toast; round and rich, with a long, spicy finish. Gold Medal at the Concours Général Agricole.
- XXO 20 years: candied fruit, blond tobacco, chocolate, vanilla, sandalwood; long, rich finish of cinnamon.
- Extra 30 years: nuts, raisins, vanilla sugar and peppermint; round, with a very long, rich and lightly oaky finish.
Marcel Trépout Vintages, from 1940 to 2015
A vintage is the eau-de-vie of a single harvest, with the year shown on the label. The appellation only allows it from ten years of age. The Marcel Trépout collection is one of the deepest we offer: from 2015 back to the 1940s, with rare years such as 1940, 1942, 1945 or 1947, kept in dame-jeanne.
It is the most personal gift idea: the year of a birth, a wedding, a birthday or a retirement. For a milestone birthday, vintages from the 1940s to the 1960s are true collector's pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions about Marcel Trépout Armagnac
What is the oldest Marcel Trépout vintage?
The oldest in our selection is the 1940, one of the very first years of the house under the Marcel Trépout name.
Why keep armagnac in a dame-jeanne?
Armagnac only ages in contact with wood. By transferring it to a glass demijohn, the cellar master freezes its evolution at the moment he judges the balance to be right: the eau-de-vie keeps its finesse without taking on too much oak.
Which grape varieties go into Trépout armagnacs?
According to the house's sheets, the blends combine ugni blanc and baco 22-A.
How should you taste a Marcel Trépout armagnac?
Serve it in a tasting glass or a small tulip glass, at room temperature, without ice. Let it sit for a few minutes before nosing it, then sip slowly: the notes of candied fruit, vanilla and spice open up gradually.
