Armagnac 1981

Choosing a 1981 armagnac means giving a brandy born from a single Gascon harvest, in the autumn of 1981, then patiently aged in oak casks. For a 45th birthday or a sapphire wedding anniversary, our selection brings together Château de Millet, Delord, Château de Laubade, Dartigalongue (including a single cask), Castarède, Baron de Sigognac, Clés des Ducs and Jean Cavé, from the classic bottle to the 2.5 litre Gascon pot.

Armagnac 1981

1981 in Gascony: a harvest of fine ripeness

In France, 1981 remains the year François Mitterrand was elected President of the Republic; in the United States, the music channel MTV made its debut. In the vineyards of Gascony, the harvest gave grapes of fine ripeness. Distilled over the following winter, they produced brandies that each estate kept in its cellar for decades. It is this long, patient story that you find in the glass.

Our selection of 1981 vintage armagnacs

Nine bottles, eight producers, a real little collection: enough to find the 1981 that matches the taste of the person you are giving it to.

  • Château de Millet, owned by the Dèche family in Eauze for five generations: a Bas-Armagnac at 42%, from baco and ugni blanc, available in the classic size, in magnum and in Gascon pot. The estate describes complex, refined aromas with notes of exotic woods, a smooth and balanced palate and a long finish. It won a gold medal at the Concours de Toulouse in 2007;
  • Dartigalongue, in Nogaro since 1838, offers two versions. The classic vintage at 42% combines exotic essences, rosemary and dried fruit, with a lovely acidity that gives it freshness. The Single Cask 1981 comes from a single cask, no. 487, bottled at 45% in a limited series of 456 numbered bottles: ripe fruit, orange blossom, rancio, walnut and generous tannins;
  • Armagnac Delord, in Lannepax: 40% ABV, in the classic size and in magnum. Sweet spices (cinnamon, ginger) and blond tobacco on the nose, fine tannins and a buttery palate;
  • Château de Laubade, in Sorbets: 40%, round and balanced, very vanilla-rich, with a light touch of rancio and good persistence;
  • Armagnac Castarède, an independent house founded in 1832: 39 years of ageing, bottled in 2020, 40% ABV;
  • Baron de Sigognac, from the Guasch family: made at Château de Bordeneuve, amber colour with golden highlights, dried fruit, prune and vanilla, a finish of almond and spices;
  • Clés des Ducs: 40%, presented in its Exception bottle with a cardboard gift box, a long, smooth armagnac, aged with a deliberately light cask influence;
  • Jean Cavé, in Lannepax since 1883: a brut de fût (cask strength, not reduced) at 40.8% ABV.

Single cask, brut de fût, 40%: choosing well

A single cask is drawn from one cask only: each bottle carries the signature of a specific barrel, in limited quantity. A brut de fût armagnac keeps its natural strength, with no added water; the Jean Cavé is 40.8%, a strength that time alone brought down in the cask. The other 1981s were brought down to 40 or 42% by the house, for a softer tasting. For a connoisseur, the single cask or the brut de fût; for a first great armagnac, Laubade, Delord or Millet.

From grape to cellar: how a 1981 is made

Armagnac is born from a white wine made from the grape varieties of the appellation: ugni blanc, baco, folle blanche, colombard. This wine is distilled continuously in the armagnac still, then the spirit ages in oak casks, often Gascon oak, which give it its colour, its tannins and its aromas; part of the alcohol evaporates every winter. The 1981 vintage contains only the 1981 harvest, without blending. And since armagnac stops evolving once it leaves the cask, the bottling date (2020 at Castarède) indicates the real length of ageing.

Almost all our 1981s come from Bas-Armagnac, the western part of the appellation, on tawny sands. Ténarèze, more central, and Haut-Armagnac, to the east, give brandies of a different character, often more structured in Ténarèze.

45th birthday or sapphire wedding anniversary: a gift of the same age

In 2026, people born in 1981 celebrate their 45th birthday, and couples married in 1981 their sapphire wedding anniversary. A bottle from their vintage has lived through the same years as they have: it is a rare gift of great quality, to share on the day of the celebration or to keep for another occasion. The Millet magnum and Gascon pot suit large gatherings; the numbered single cask will delight the collector.

How to taste a 1981 vintage armagnac

Pour it into a tulip glass, at room temperature. Look at its colour, then let it breathe for a few minutes: the aromas of candied fruit, prune and spices reveal themselves little by little. This is the whole experience of an old armagnac. A small sip, held for a moment in the mouth, is enough. The single cask, more intense, needs a little more time in the glass.

Once opened, store the bottle upright, away from light and heat; it keeps for several months.

Frequently asked questions about 1981 armagnac

How much does a 1981 armagnac cost?

It changes with the producer, the size and the rarity: a numbered single cask or a Gascon pot cannot be compared with a classic bottle. Each product page shows the price, the strength and the bottle size, so you can buy with complete clarity.

Which producers of 1981 armagnac are renowned?

Our page brings together historic Bas-Armagnac houses, such as Dartigalongue (1838), Delord (1893) or Castarède (1832), and family estates such as Château de Millet and Château de Laubade.

What are the characteristics of the 1981 armagnac?

Depending on the estate: notes of dried fruit, prune, vanilla and spices, sometimes the rancio of very old brandies, a round palate and good length.

Which grape varieties are used for the 1981 armagnac?

Baco and ugni blanc at Château de Millet and Baron de Sigognac; baco, ugni blanc, folle blanche and colombard at Château de Laubade. Each estate works with its own vines.
